Valentine's Day often evokes images of red hearts, roses, candy, and the avalanche of colorful Valentine's cards from elementary school. This romantic holiday is more notably the quintessential occasion to exchange gifts with loved ones.

Not sure what your expression of love should look like? Diamonds are synonymous with Valentine's Day for good reason. Take a look at these four meaningful reasons to gift your Valentine with diamonds this year.

1. Diamonds Endure
Diamonds form under extreme heat and pressure, lending them incredible strength and hardness. In fact, any geologist will inform you diamonds represent a rating of 10 on the Mohs hardness scale of minerals. But don't let their scratch-resistant qualities diminish the fact that diamonds are a gift that endures.

Diamonds continue to grace a neck or adorn ears and fingers long after flowers wilt or fade. Diamonds may not deliver instant sugary pleasure like chocolates, but their presence bestows lasting feelings of love and contentment. Even better, diamonds are calorie-free.

2. Diamonds Are Symbolic
Diamonds symbolize durability and constancy. Throughout history, diamonds were thought to have magical or supernatural powers that could ward off evil spirits or assure your victory in battle. More importantly, diamonds stand for light, the sun, perfection, faithfulness, and love.

What better way to fully epitomize your love and commitment than with a diamond? In fact, the first recorded use of a diamond engagement ring was when Maximillian I proposed to Mary of Burgundy in 1477.

However, you need not limit a diamond gift to an engagement ring. If you're not quite ready to make that step, you can still express your love with a diamond necklace or bracelet. Already engaged or married? Reinforce your promise with an antique or heirloom diamond ring.

3. Diamonds Are an Investment
We perceive diamonds as valuable because they are rare. Most diamonds form deep within the earth's mantle and are then brought closer to the surface by volcanic eruptions. In earlier times, people preferred to place their wealth in diamonds because their size made them easier to carry than heavy gold or other valuable, bulky goods.

Diamonds can become an investment, especially those of great quality. The four C's of diamonds teach us that various factors determine a diamond's value:

  • Cut: This is how a diamond is shaped and polished to reflect the maximum amount of light.
  • Color: This is the absence of color due to impurities and defects indicated on a rating scale from D–Z.
  • Carat: This is the measurement of a diamond's mass after it is cut.
  • Clarity: This is the presence of inclusions or defects like crystals, cracks, or clouding.

Nearly colorless diamonds with high clarity and a beautiful cut will disperse light brilliantly and appear to flash like fire.

A gift of diamonds is also an investment in your relationship. Remember, the commitment and love they symbolize help create and strengthen emotional bonds with your loved one. Each time he or she selects and wears your piece of diamond jewelry, that bond deepens.

Finally, those diamonds are the start of a new heirloom your loved one can hand down to children, grandchildren, or other successors.

4. Diamonds Are Diverse
As you select a piece of jewelry for your Valentine, keep in mind you have countless options to demonstrate your deepest affections. Diamonds are always a reliable gem choice for necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, or bands.
